Aseanarean
Marine Association (AMA)
The Association began in
September 1988 as a loose network of marinas in the region,
and later expanded to embrace the entire boating trade
within - and in the vicinity of -
ASEAN (Association of South
East Asian Nations). ASEAN's ten member countries are
Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia (with 17,000 islands, it is a
cruising paradise waiting to be discovered), Laos, Malaysia,
Myanmar, Philippines (9,000 islands), Singapore, Thailand,
and Vietnam. Collectively, these countries are home
to more than 500 million people, with a collective GDP of
US$750 billion. The region is the third largest overseas
market for US exports, and two-way ASEAN-USA trade reached a
record US$135 billion in 2000. AMA membership extends to
neighbouring countries including China, Hong Kong and
Taiwan.
The objective of the
Aseanarean Marine Association is to promote professionalism
in marine industry practices within Aseanarean.
The Association’s pro-tem chairman, YP Loke, represents it
at the ICOMIA Marinas Committee (IMC), the world-wide body
for marinas.
ICOMIA is the acronym for the UK-based
International Council of Marine Industry Associations.

About
Aseanarean
The term Aseanarean was coined to give a nautical
connotation to the ASEAN region and to promote it as a
single cruising destination, in the same way that the
Mediterranean and the Caribbean represents cruising regions
covering many countries. However, the term is being
used loosely in the context of the Association, as there is
no intention to exclude the neighbouring countries
surrounding ASEAN - in fact their participation and
contribution is vital. Aseanarean is a word designed to
brand the region from a nautical perspective.
